Week Thirty-seven - Last Week of School!
This week was the last week of school. Students had an awesome time finishing and presenting their projects. They all did such a fantastic job with publishing and illustrating their poetry books. They also helped the elves to make a cake and their simple machines looked fantastic. Finally, their book studies were very detailed and showcased the amazing books they studied this month. I am so proud of all their hard work and dedication!
It was a bittersweet week this week as we had lots of fun things to do but we also had to say goodbye for the summer and goodbye to some of our friends who will not be returning this year. I hope everyone has an amazing summer and spends lots of time witht their families. I am excited to see everyone so grown up in August!

Week Thirty-six - Summer Concert!
We have been busy builders, writers, and readers this week continuing to work on our projects. We have completed typing up our poems in writing and are beginning to illustrate them to create a complete published work. We have completed our summaries, character evaluations, and finding new words using context clues and are now creating a book study poster to finalize our research in reading. In science and math we have been finishing our STEM project about simple machines. We have finished our first try at creating our model and started to improve it to make it perfect.
This week grade 1F did such an amazing job at the summer concert. They performed so many amazing songs and musical pieces and I am so proud of them. We also had a chance to see the art exhibition and were the audience for the second grade Jeoparbee game.
Next week we will finish up all our projects, create a memory book to remember what we have done this year, and pack up all our work to take home. It is our last week, and I can't believe how fast this year has been. Time flies when you're having fun!

Week Thirty-five - Jeoparbee!
We had a lot happen this week. We have been wrapping up our writing and social studies poem by writing a poem about a good citizen and publishing all the poems we have written so far using Google Docs. We have began creating prototypes of a simple machine for our science project about motion. In reading, we have continued learning even more from books by finishing recording character traits, and defining new words using picture and context clues. We have finished our DRA testing and everyone has made awesome progress since the middle of the year. This week G1F performed their drama performance infront of high school students.
Next week we will be wrapping up our projects, reviewing long vowel sounds for our spelling lists, and our summer concert will be on May 30th. See you on Monday and have a great weekend!

Week Thirty-four - Poetic Expressions
This week was a busy week as we continued learning new information in our units. We began talking about revisiting books to learn more in reading and started looking deeper into re-telling what we have read, talking about the setting, as well as the characters in the same book that we chose at the end of last week. In writing, we continued our poetry unit and learned about descriptive words (adjectives) to help us make riddle poems and list poems. Students really like making rhythm poems and have been making their own even during lunch and recess. In math, we have been continuing our year review. We have talked about time, money, and two-digit addition. It has been exciting to play different games to help us practice our skills. In social studies, we talked about people who make laws - those who work in the government. We discussed the roles of the three types of governments - community, state, and national - and what good citizens are expected to do. In science, we talked about three different kinds of simple machines - pulleys, levers and ramps - and how they help us in our lives every day.
Next week we will have DRA testing to check the students' reading levels at the end of the year. As a result, we will not have guided reading groups or a spelling test. We will also have our Jeoparbee game on Friday with a practice game on Wednesday. It will be another fun week!

Week Thirty-three - Term 5 Explorations!
We finished our MAP tests this week and continued our explorations in our new units. I am so proud of everyone in the class and everything they have learned this year. I will be talking to students about the strengths I see after their MAP test and helping them to reach their goals until the end of the year.
In our poetry unit this week, we wrote some "I like" poetry and began our poetry shares by signing up for 'open-mic' sessions at the end of each writing class. Students are really enjoying closing their eyes to visualize each poem. In reading, we are continuing to build on our reading comprehension by trying to do a five-finger retell after reading our books. In math, we have finished up our unit 9 test and began doing a year end review of everything we have learned so far. In science, we have explored motion and pushes and pulls. In social studies, we have talked about people in a community and laws. It was a very eventful week and we are looking forward to another great week on Monday!

Week Thirty-two - Book Fair!
We began term 5 this week and had lots of things to do. We took our STAR assessment and received our new book colors to guide us in choosing good fit books for AR and library. We had assembly and performed our short drama rhymes. We also started our new unit in writing and began reading poetry. We also began writing rhythm poems and had so much fun! In reading, we continued our guided reading books from last week and practiced keeping track of setting by using pictures and words. In math, we wrapped up our fractions unit by comparing and finding equivalent fractions. We had a busy week as we wrapped up our science and social studies chapters with our chapter tests. On Friday, we had a fun time choosing books at the book fair, having a birthday party, and having a visit from the grade 5 students to be interviewed for their project. It was an awesome week and we have another one coming up after the weekend!
Next week, we will have our MAP test on Tuesday and Wednesday. Please remember that a MAP test is an adaptive tool to help teachers and parents improve learning for all students by seeing a student's strengths and areas of growth and make informed decisions to help them reach their goals. Your child does not need to study for this test. It is recommended that your child has a good night's sleep and a healthy breakfast. See you next week.

Week Thirty - Sports Day!
This week students continued working on their projects. In science, we finished researching different animal parts and how the animal uses them. We collected data to see what problems other students have in the class. We are now starting to combine our science project with writing, to write our opinion about how an animal part can help to solve a human problem. In social studies, we set up our community and had a chance to be consumers and producers as we set up our stores and had a chance to spend some money. We had a chance to practice this week and will have one more shot at setting up our stores for the final presentation next week. In reading, we worked in partners as our partners helped us read tricky words, taught us new word meanings, and helped us to smooth out our reading. Next week will be a busy week with wrapping up all our projects. It will be an awesome time!
Next week, we will have Diversity Day on Friday. If you have some clothing at home that represents your child's culture - they are encouraged to wear those clothes on that day. Please don't buy new clothes just for this day - students can still enjoy clothing worn by others while wearing their new house colored t-shirts. Next week's birthday party and uniform free Friday will be moved to May 3rd. Thank you!

Week Twenty-eight - First Week Back From Spring Break
It was so wonderful to see everyone back after spring break. Students were excited to get back into their learning and into their projects. In math, we continued to learn about making change - a skill that we will need when we open our shops which we are designing in Social Studies for business. Students chose a good or service that they can provide and decided that all stores must have an original name as well as a store sign. In science we are continuing to study how different animals use specific body parts to solve a human and adapting those parts to help us solve human problems. In writing, we are continuing to learn about opinion writing and expanding our paragraphs to include as many reasons as we can as well as an introduction and conclusion. Finally, in reading, we are learning how to try different sounds to read words that don't sound right until we find a good fit. Students are having fun creating and designing as well as trying new skills in class.
Next week will be a short school week, as Friday there will be no classes due to the parent teacher conferences. As a result, students will not have a spelling list next week. Instead, students are encouraged to practice a list of sight words as well as the nouns and verbs worksheets that correspond with what we are learning in writing in their language packet. Homework can be handed in the following Monday, April 15th. Thank you and see you soon!

Week Twenty - History & Music Museum
This week first graders had a great time learning about the past life of settlers and Native Americans and comparing what they did and used to what we do and use today. This was made even more exciting by our field trip to the Museum of Modern History, where we got to see and touch some of the items that were used in the past in Korea. In science, we had fun exploring different liquids and watching them change shape to fit the container - coming to the conclusion that all liquids are different as some pour slowly and some pour quickly, but they all change shape to fit the container. In math class, we learned about function machines and tried to find rules for number patterns that go in and come out of the machine. In writing, we continued to improve our writing by thinking about how we can teach our readers. Finally, in reading, we thought about how writers wanted to teach their readers, and tried to use non-fiction reading strategies to catch all the facts. We had a chance to practice for our Jeoparbee game next week and will have one more practice before the official game next Thursday.
In February (11th-15th), we will have our book week. If you would like to bring a pet to be our Reading Buddy (February 12th) or participate as a Global Reader (reading a book to a small group of students in another language on February 14th), please fill out the forms here no later than February 1st.

Week Nineteen - Explorations!
This week was fun of exciting explorations as we were introduced to the Accelerated Reader program, set goals, and began taking quizzes for the library books we read in class. We also explored mass in science and compared different items to see how much mass they have using a balance scale. We got to explore different kinds of liquids and see what properties we could see, feel, smell, and touch (we had to guess a taste). In writing, we began writing a chapter by hooking our reader with a topic sentence and worked on concluding the chapter. In math, we explored adding two digit numbers with place value blocks and got to practice exchanging values to make it easier to see the answer. We also practiced number stories and had a chance to make up our own for our friends to solve. In social studies, we made a time line about important events that happened in our life in the past.
Next week we are excited for our field trip to the Modern History Museum so we can interact with objects people used in the past as well as the Museum of Musical Instruments Around the World. The field trip will be held on Thursday, January 24th. Students need to bring a snack and a water bottle and wear comfortable shoes for walking. A small backpack is recommended for that day. See you next week, explorers!

Week Eighteen - First Week Back
Grade 1F students had an amazing week back. Students were excited to get back into classroom routines and learning explorations. In writing this week, students began thinking about a topic for their non-fiction informative chapter book. They also planned mini-topics for each of the chapters in their book. Some students began writing a topic sentence for their chapter. In reading, students began learning some strategies that readers use when reading non-fiction books. We began by taking a sneak peek at the front cover and title page to see how much we can learn. We then practiced stopping after every page we read to really study the words, pictures, and labels on each page to make sure we absorb as much information as possible. For math, students explored place value of two and three digit numbers using place value blocks. We also began learning about matter in science with an experiment where we inquired about what matter is and came to the realization that matter is something we could feel through our senses. Finally, in social studies we began learning that time can be called present, past and future, and compared objects we use now to objects used in the past.
It was an eventful week and we had a blast with all of our learning. We look forward to another fun week next week!

Happy Thanksgiving holiday! It was a short week this week but we learned a lot.
We began researching for our math project where we will design our own Christmas wrapping paper using number and shape patterns. We continued to write our "how to" writing, adding an introduction and even more details. As we read this week, we worked on jumping words by phonemes or word parts to help us read tricky words. In science, we summarized what we have learned so far by making our own Earth book. We also created a 'me on the map' activity in social studies which helped us to see the difference between a town, city, country, and continent.
While we were busy learning, we also made time to talk about the brief history and meaning behind Thanksgiving. We made Thanksgiving turkeys to say thank you to people and things we are grateful for and made Nutella and banana sandwiches to share with grade 1B. It was a fantastic week!
We will be going to the Seoul Children's Museum on Thursday, November 29th. Labs and ASPs will continue as usual. Enjoy the long weekend! :)

Week Thirteen - Science Fun
This week we learned about weathering and erosion in science through a fun experiment, had our last adventures with Pooh Bear before he goes off to visit some new friends in Scotland, added details to our "how to" writing by thinking about questions our readers might have, finished our patterns unit in math, and continued using long and short vowel phonics rules to help us read tricky words.
Next week will be a short week so we will not have spelling lists. Have a wonderful weekend and I am excited to see everyone back for another great week on Monday!

Week Twelve - We Love Songs!
It was a great week in the G1F classroom. We continued learning songs to help us learn phonics rules that we can apply to solve tricky words in reading, finished our continents and oceans mini-project, learned that some land is made out of rocks and looked at rocks under the magnifying glass to help us classify them, found rules for patterns in numbers so we can continue them, and wrote our how-to writing across pages to get ready for adding more details. I am excited for all the new things we will get a chance to do next week. There will be a math test on unit 3 next Friday. Have an amazing weekend!
Week Eleven - Halloween/ Spirit Week
We had a blast this week! On Monday we celebrated our differences with Misfit Monday. On Tuesday we talked about our similarities during Twin Tuesday and learned to carve a pumpkin with Mr. Hill. On Wednesday we celebrated Halloween and went trick-or-treating. On Thursday we had an amazing time with Retro-wear Thursday. Between all those events, we began to use outlines to organize our ideas in writing, continued finding patterns on number lines in math, began to use phonics rules to help us with tricky words in reading, and continued studying about continents, landforms and waterforms in science and social studies. It was a fun week!
I had a great time getting to meet most of you on Friday and I am excited to continue working together to help all the students in this class feel confident and grow as individuals. Have a good weekend!

Week Ten - Field Trip to Seoul Grand Park Zoo
This was a very eventful week as we continued learning about our new units in term two! We have continued to find patterns everywhere in math, learned about land and water forms on our Earth in science, learned a song to remember continents in social studies, started our "how to" writing unit with a delicious smoothie recipe, and started to learn habits to solve hard words in reading.
On Wednesday we had a very fun time at the zoo. We saw as many animals as we could from different continents, but since the zoo was too big, we could only visit two continents so far. Maybe next year we will have a chance to venture into more continents to see what other animals the world holds.
It was an amazing week and we are all excited for Spirit Week next week!
If you haven't had a chance to sign up for a parent teacher conference time yet, you may access my sign-up sheet here. Thank you and see you on Friday!

Week Nine - End of Term 1
We had our last day of term 1 on Wednesday and a short week this week. It was very productive and students have finished their projects and are in the process of uploading them all on SeeSaw. They have done amazing work and I am so proud of them. Keep an eye out next week for all the uploaded projects on SeeSaw.
We had a great time harvesting sweet potatoes with Mr. Hill this week. We got our hands soil-y and saw how potatoes grow under the ground like a root. I hope you had a chance to try the sweet potatoes we harvested from our school garden.
Next week we are going on our field trip on Wednesday to Seoul Grand Park. We will have a great time and explore the zoo together, looking at plants and animals!

Week Eight - Jog-a-Fest
This week we have been completing our projects for first term. Students were editing and publishing their writing stories, working on their math number stories project, observing their growing plants and recording their observations for science, recording themselves read using good reading habits, and reviewing what they know in social studies for their test. We will be uploading their completed projects next week to SeeSaw and are so excited for you to see them!
We had a fun time during Jog-a-Fest! Students worked together in their teams to finish tasks, run around the track, and complete relay races. It was an amazing day and I am so happy to have spent it with all the students and parents who were able to attend.
A few reminders next week - since it is a short week, we will not have our usual spelling test and your child will not receive a spelling list on Monday. You can review previous spelling lists for extra practice. Also, we have a unit 2 math test coming up on Thursday. Have an amazing weekend and see you on Monday!

Week Seven - Book Fair!
This week was a great week filled with hard work as grade 1F students continued to make progress with their projects for this term. In science, we planted seeds and in the upcoming weeks we will watch them grow and record our progress. In social studies, we made a project to compliment our learning about why people move and what they bring with them when they do. In writing, we are continuing to work on our small moment stories and will begin to edit and publish one next week. In reading, we are reviewing our good reading habits and recording ourselves reading to show our progress. Finally, in math we are continuing to explore the use of numbers by working with clocks, rulers, and coins.
We also had a practice fire drill this week. Grade 1F students were brave and responsible, lining up quickly and walking nicely while evacuating to their safe spot on the green space. We were all safe and sound.
Last but not least, we had an exciting time on Thursday and Friday choosing books and snacks from the Book Fair and snack stand. Everyone wanted to say a big thank you to all the parents who helped out. Also, a big thank you to all the parents for our new books and delicious snacks! Have an awesome weekend!

Week Six - Last Week Before Chuseok Break
This week was our last week before Chuseok break. We have done a lot and worked hard as always. Last week, we finished our Math MAP test and this past Tuesday we finished our Reading. For this season, we are finished taking MAP tests. These results will help me see where students are with their learning and support them in their growth. I will share the results of these tests and the progress your child has made in the fall parent-teacher conferences.
This week we had our first math test. We finished up Unit 1 and have progressed onto Unit 2, which focuses on counting numbers in different ways. We also made awesome progress in our writing unit, bringing our stories to life by adding moving words and quotations to make our characters speak. In reading, we are focusing on picking up good habits when reading like breaking hard words into parts and looking at the pictures for clues.
In science, we have made a book about all the information we have learned about plants so far and are working on adding them to SeeSaw. Finally, in social studies we are learning about why people move to other countries and what they bring with them when they move.
It has been a busy week and we are all ready to enjoy Chuseok break together with our families! I can't wait to see everyone back after the holiday for more learning adventures!

Week Five - Library Day
This week was a fun and busy week. Students had a great time during library day and enjoyed having reading time with parents, friends, and teachers. We learned a lot of cool stuff in the classroom too! We saw the results of our science experiment from last Friday, so we have now seen the stem do it's job - helping us to learn plant parts and their jobs in science. We have practiced using a variety of different tools in math, including a thermometer, a geo-board, pattern blocks, and place value blocks. In social studies, we have been continuing to learn about the community. We have learned to story-tell with partners in writing to help each other, and to set reading goals in reading.
We also completed our first ever MAP test on Friday. MAP tests are a Measures of Academic Progress test, which students complete on the computer. These tests help us to determine what your child already knows and what our next steps are to support them in their learning so there is no need to study before this test. Next Tuesday, we will be doing our Reading MAP test. Please help your child to have a good night's rest and a healthy breakfast so they are energized and ready to go on that day.
We are having so much fun and learning a lot in class every week! Can't wait for next week!

Week Four - First Week of Spelling
It was our first week of spelling words. We began to work on practicing them in class through word work activities and at home as well. On Friday, we did such an awesome job writing our first spelling test! I am so proud of all the students for doing their best.
We also worked really hard in other subjects. In reading, we practiced choosing just right books and reading more and more. In science, we learned about plant parts and their jobs. In social studies, we continued to learn about our community and citizenship through exploring student jobs. Finally, in math, we continued counting our numbers - practicing counting using tally marks. We have had a really eventful week and have documented many of our work on SeeSaw for you to see. It will be awesome to see everyone again on Monday after a fun and relaxing weekend!

Week Two - Routines and Resources
We have had a wonderful week to have a chance to practice the classroom routines, jobs and get more familiar with our class schedule this week. Students are having a wonderful time getting to know all the teachers and learning their jobs around the classroom - making it their own space for learning adventures! We did not have school on Friday due to a typhoon warning, but I am so happy to see everyone again on Monday - safe and well-rested.
Week One - Welcome to Grade 1F
This week was an exciting one as we got to meet all the friends in our class, learn classroom routines, take a tour of the school, and make our class rules. We had a fun time to work together on Friday during Golden Time to make slime. I was so happy to see everyone's smiling faces this week and can't wait to see everyone again on Monday!
